Concert Review
Godsmack rocked the house. Prepared for the show by putting all their songs on a cd and driving into town a few hours before the show. The plan was to enjoy some barley pops and grub in the sunshine while waiting for the show to start at 8:00PM. I had 2 Row 23 tix and was trying to unload one or upgrade to a better seat. I went to the back door of the Orpheum where the bands come and go and met some fellow fans hanging around waiting for the band. This is where I met Sean (see pictures), the consummate rocker and fan with a very distinguishable goatee. He’s always trying to buy a smoke off someone or smoking BC’s agriculture. He’s quite the character and yacks it up with everyone.

He hooked me up with someone who got me row 3 centre for my tickets. What a great seat. I hung around out back instead of going to a pub and got to meet the opening band Hinder (from Oklahoma) and then met with everyone from Godsmack except Sully the lead singer. Got pictures with them, autographs and chatted with them. Was a lot of fun. Hinder was about to go on stage so I headed in. I saw the T-Shirts and bought my first concert shirt in over 10 years. I’m now the proud owner of a black Godsmack shirt. I skipped by my 3rd row and went right to row 1 for Hinder. They were great – really good showmen and their sound was superb. Just a fun band to watch and rock to. Got to high five them and got some guitar picks. Afterwards headed up to the bar to down several Granville Island Lagers. Note: if ever going to Orpheum, use the upstairs bar – way faster. The biggest lineup was to go to the balcony outside to smoke. People had to wait 15 minutes to smoke – too funny. After numerous visits to the bar, I ran into Sean again. He snuck in, he didn’t have a ticket but was able to swindle his way in. I bring Sean down to row 3 since he didn’t have tickets and got him up close. Godsmack came on and I hopped over a few seats to the front with some girls from Seattle who paid $300 US for their seats. It was so great being in the front and not having a mosh pit at all. Security kept everyone in their seats and everyone stayed there and rocked in their own 20x20 space (except me of course). Got lots of pictures and video of the band. Kicking myself I brought the 1Gb memory chip and not the 2Gb as I ran out of space halfway in. They totally rocked and I made sure I got lots of high fives with the band as the approached the side of the stage.

Their show was more of a club show than stadium show which made it more intimate. They lacked the pyrotechnics they often have at larger venues but made up for it with good lighting and sound. Orpheum is a great place for any show.

One of my many highlights was when Sully (the singer) and Shannon (the drummer) both took to the stage in their own large drum kits on wheels and did some dueling and jamming. I’ve seen it before on my Godsmack changes DVD but in person was way better. Wish it was longer. The band from Boston played all their big hits over their past 4 albums like VooDoo, Awake, Greed with an encore of Black Sabbaths version of The Wizard, Speak off of their IV CD and Stand Alone.
I waited around at
the end for the set list off their equipment and everyone ignored me and security tried to push me away from the stage telling me it was just a piece of paper, print one out at home. I told her that wasn’t the point, it was that paper I want and it was important that I have it that night and tomorrow it will be just a piece of paper but tonight, it’s godsmacks set list. I seeked out an old roady who came over to give it to me.

Went back to the back door and met up with Sean and we waited for Sully to come out – I wanted a picture with him and get his sig. Sean was getting the band members to sign his calf and he was going to tattoo their signatures. He did once already. Interesting dude. Sean takes off and the next thing I know he has a backstage pass to party with the band. I’m so jealous, I give him $20 and he gives it to me and he takes off. I go to the door and security is about to let me in and then they rip the pass off of me. Seems like Sean ripped security off. I was choked as I was almost in there, backstage pass !!! but fair is fair I guess, Sean burned us both. Wasn’t too long though and then a bevy of beauties came out (about 15 of them) and then shortly afterwards Sully came out and chatted with us and signed my DVD sleeve and took a picture with me. It was worth the wait.
Side note: Met an interesting retired couple hanging around. I asked them what they were doing there as they are not your average Godsmack fan and it turns out they drive the big rigs to Alaska. Godsmack is playing in Alaska next and the only way to drive that far in a short timeframe is to team up with another driver and this old retired couple were flown in from Missouri just to do that. Nice couple. They’ll drive up there and back and then they fly home again – all very fascinating the workings of the entertainment business.
